Poem: Light in the Darkness

These photons,
These waves,
These packets of starlight
Which burst into being through energy conserved,

Are swept through the vastness,

Flying to us or through us,

A thousand million shades of colour to observe.

Their journeys are vast,

Taking several millennia,

To reach the sun’s surface,

From its atom fusing core,

So the light through your window,

Began its journey to meet you,

When Neanderthals roamed and giant mammoths roared.

You will find nothing faster,

To beat light you break time,

But the further we look,

The more we can find,

We can even see light from the dawn of the universe,

As a microwave background all directions around us.

So look, see the light, feed your thoughts, ask questions,

There is so much to learn from the Earth and the heavens.
